Shoulder dislocation
What is shoulder dislocation:- The shoulder dislocation generally occurs when the round ball present at the top of the upper arm bone or the humerus bone leaves the socket in the shoulder blade or scapula, this basically mean the socket bones and the ball present in the shoulder gets separated and the ball present at the top of humerus comes out of position.
In shoulder dislocation tissues that are holding the bones together including muscles and tendons that connects the bones to the muscles also gets damage or sometimes injured. Along with this tearing of cartilage can also be possible which can lead to further degeneration of the joint.
Symptoms of shoulder dislocation:-
The basic symptoms of dislocated shoulder include: -
- Extreme weakness or pain
- Swelling in the whole shoulder area
- Brusing or redness present on the site of dislocated shoulder
- Numbness tingling sensation in the arms hands and fingers
- Weakness in overall arm
- Immobility of the affected part
- Visible shoulder changes that are very prominent
- Intense pain
Causes of shoulder dislocation:-
The shoulder joint is the most complex as well as most frequently dislocated joint of the body as this joint has ability to move in several directions, this is the only joint of the body that can dislocate forward backward or downward. The dislocation of shoulder joint can be complete or partial depending upon the injury or trauma.
The most common dislocations that occur is through different of the shoulder the ligaments or the tissues that join the bones of the shoulder can be stretched or torn which can make the dislocation even worst.
Basic causes include-
- Fall or accident- a sudden fall or accident in which there is awkward landing after the fall on the shoulder can lead to dislocation of the joint and also tears, such as fall from a ladder can dislocate a shoulder easily.
- Sports injury — shoulder dislocation is most common injury in sports and mainly in contacts sports such as football hockey rugby basically in sports that involves falls and contact.
The above causes makes it very clear that it can be easily caused by any resistance against the shoulder joint.
Complications:-
Along with the shoulder dislocation there might be some moderate or severe complications that comes along some of the most common complication include-
- Nerve damage or vascular damage that can be in or around the shoulder joint
- Tearing of muscles and tendons that supports the shoulder joint
- Lack of strength of the affected arm
- Torn ligaments of the shoulder joint that helps in movement
- Becoming more prone to further this location especially in severe injury cases
- Rotator cuff injuries or tear- there might be higher risk of developing rotator cuff tear along with the dislocation.
- In many people they are maybe sustained fracture chances when the shoulder is dislocated.
Treatment of shoulder dislocation:-
The treatment protocol in shoulder dislocation involves further protocols:-
Closed reduction:- in this procedure general maneuvers can help to move the shoulder bone back to its original position depending upon the amount of pain and swelling present at the site general muscle relection or a general anaesthesia can be given before moving the shoulder bones, randi shoulder bones are back in the place the pain will improve immediately.
Immobilization:- after the closed deduction in mobilisation of the joint is done which includes wearing a split or sling for few weeks or months that can help to keep the shoulder into immobilization and restricting the shoulder for further movements.
Surgery:- surgical intervention can help the people who have weak shoulder joints or ligament and their are repeated shoulder dislocation despite strengthening and rehabilitation in some of the cases damaged nerves or blood vessels require surgical intervention. surgical treatment can also reduce the risk of injury in future and any other dislocations.
Rehabilitation:- rehabilitation program generally helps to restore the lost range of motion strength and ability of the shoulder joint to do the normal activities. The rehabilitation process and time generally depends on the severette and duration of the injury or dislocation.
